Joey the Joy Bird\

The New Year brings new beginnings, and new opportunities to find joy all around us! All month long, Joey the Joy Bird will share his joy with you. You see, Joey was born with a broken wing and cannot fly, but that doesn't get him down. Joey finds joy by singing and reminding others to be joyful, no matter what obstacles may come their way.

What brings you joy? Share your feelings!

Where did the month of June go?  When I look at my schedule, I realize it was so busy I barely had time to breathe. Since June, each Thursday, I've been working with the children of wounded warriors, Department of Defense employees and active military personnel Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Today my girlfriend told me that she needs a bone marrow transplant. This afternoon I registered with www.dkmsamericas.org because I love her.

I now truly understand the phrase, “lemons to lemonade”.  Early Saturday morning as I was getting my nails done, I received a call from my daughter in London who informed me that my e-mail account had been hijacked. The hijacker had stolen all of my contacts and locked me out of my e-mail account!

What Color is Love?

I completed the song “What Color Is Love” for the KK and Friends' second CD.  I sang this song 38 years ago with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem.  I was 12 years old and this was my first professional theatre job.  The Arts Council, under the direction of Halsey North and his wonderful wife Alice (see photo above) was in the process of becoming desegregated.  Alice and Halsey were young and straight out of graduate school when they came to Winston-Salem.  To say that the city was divided by color was an understatement!  Prejudice was running rampant in a very southern and gentile understated manner.  You couldn’t fool Halsey and Alice though.  This wonderful Quaker couple saw through the sugary sweetness of subliminal racism of the city divided by color, knew that it was wrong and courageously stepped onto the frontline as warriors on the battlefield of goodness in bringing the races together.  Trust me, Halsey and Alice caught a lot of grief from those in the city who did not embrace change.  But they didn’t care.  They pressed on for they had faith, hope and love for all people.  I love Halsey and Alice North!  By ensuring that the Showmobile , a musical show traveled into all areas of the city, Halsey and Alice were orchestrating that the races come together.  In singing “What Color Is Love” in all neighborhoods of Winston-Salem, I spread the message that love didn't have a color.  If I remember correctly, “What Color Is Love” became the show stopper because it made folks think  about their behavior  It was a great message in 1972, and it's still a great message in 2010.  I loved this song then, and after recording it in the studio, I love it even more now.

Warning:  You must read blog dated April 11th before you read this blog to fully understand! LOL

I FAILED THE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE TEST!

On Monday, I had the opportunity to show unconditional love to someone, and boy did I fail.  My emotions/feelings got the best of me.  Not only did I not show unconditional love as I stated I was going to do, I was willing to walk away from the friendship like I often do when I believe someone has wronged me.  Why?  Because I felt that this person had not been totally truthful with me and truth is a deal breaker for me.
